P. Christian Schulze

Prof. Schulze is Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine I and Division of Cardiology at the University Hospital Jena, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Germany.

Prof. Schulze received MD and PhD degrees from the University of Leipzig, Faculty of Medicine, Germany. He completed residency in Internal Medicine at Boston University and a Clinical Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center. Previously, Dr. Schulze trained as a postdoctoral fellow in Cardiovascular Research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and served as an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Until 2015, he was Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, one of the largest heart failure, mechanical assist device and cardiac transplant centers in the US. Dr. Schulze is board-certified in the United States in Cardiovascular Medicine and Internal Medicine with subspecialty certification in Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation, Nuclear Cardiology and Echocardiography and in Germany in Internal Medicine and Cardiology.

Prof. Schulze’s research interest focuses on cardiac and systemic metabolism in advanced heart failure, the role of ventricular assist devices for bridging patients to cardiac transplantation and outcome parameters of patients with acute and chronic heart failure. Further, his studies have identified novel outcome parameters of patients with advanced heart failure, patients on LVAD support and after cardiac transplantation.

His projects are supported by grants from the National Institute of Health, the Else-Kröner-Fresenius Foundation, the American Heart Association, the German Research Foundation, the German Heart Foundation and the German Ministry of Research and Education as well as intramural funding. Prof. Schulze has published more than 370 peer-reviewed manuscripts and currently serves as an editorial board member of the journal Circulation. Prof. Schulze is a member of the EUROTRANSPLANT advisory board, speaker of the working group on “Mechanical Assist Support and Heart Transplantation” of the German Cardiac Society, reviewer for the heart failure specialist certification of the German Cardiac Society and member of the Commission on Clinical Cardiology of the German Cardiac Society. He served as the governor of the German Chapter of the American College of Cardiology from 2020 to 2023.
