William J. Griffiths

Bill received his BSc and PhD in Chemistry from University College Cardiff (UK). He was trained in the fundamentals of mass spectrometry in Swansea University (UK) working with Professor John H Beynon at the Royal Society Research Unit, and then in biomedical mass spectrometry working with Professor Jan Sjövall at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm (Sweden). Bill has held academic positions at the University of the West Indies, Karolinska Institutet, and The School of Pharmacy - University of London. In 2007 Bill moved to Swansea University to take the Chair of Mass Spectrometry.

Bill’s research interests are in cholesterol biosynthesis and metabolism, particularly pathways of bile acid biosynthesis. Bill works closely with long term collaborator Professor Yuqin Wang, and the focus of their group’s work is on the involvement of oxysterols in human biology, particularly in relation to inborn errors of metabolism, neurodegenerative disease, fatty liver disease and the immune system.
